Join us at Off the Walls Arts for LOCOmotion, a free community block party celebrating the artist in everyone!

Located along Off the Rails Art Line—our ongoing initiative to transform a 1.5 mile decommissioned railroad line into a pedestrian trail connecting South Memphis to Downtown—LOCOmotion will feature live music by Marcella Simien & Her Lovers, kids sidewalk chalk stations, and more.

Go on a walking tour of Off the Rails and visit the newly completed murals created by participants in our September mural workshop series. Indoors will be an exhibition opening highlighting even more artwork produced by students across all our 2026 autumn workshops.

LOCOmotion has something for everyone, so put on your sweaters and sneakers, and come take part in our growing artist community!

RSVP today (or just show up!).

Supported by ARTSmemphis, Tennessee Arts Commission, & America Walks.

The Bread & Puppet Circus is coming to Memphis, TN! Join us for The Upside Down Circus!

“Is it or is it not?
Am I asleep or am I awake?
Am I a cockroach or am I a me?”

Possibilitarians! We must demonstrate humanity’s upside-down situation in the face of the government’s depraved falsehoods. Luxury silence and despair must be replaced by revolt orchestras that radically oppose the radically wrong system.
It is time to unforget the revolution-in-progress and aim for the evermore on the universe’s shore.”

The one and only Bread & Puppet Circus is back to confront our upside-down situation! With stilt dancers, paper maché beasts of all sizes, and a riotous brass band, The Upside Down World Circus is an urgent spectacle of protest and celebration.

After each show Bread & Puppet will serve its famous sourdough rye bread with aioli, and “Cheap Art” – books, posters, postcards, pamphlets and banners from the Bread & Puppet Press – will be for sale.

$20 tickets; no one turned away for lack of funds. Free entry for kids under 12. Get your tickets here!

FAQs:

• Is the show ok for kids? While there is nothing inappropriate for children in our shows, we do speak on heavy topics. We generally tell parents that if they would allow their children to read a newspaper, the show will be fine for them.

• You say “No one turned away for lack of funds” but do you mean it? Yes. If you need financial assistance with a ticket, please email tickets@breadandpuppet.org and let us know which show (including where) you are looking to attend. Admission by donation upon arrival for kids 6 and under.

• Will there be bread and aioli? Yes, bread with optional garlic aioli. It’s vegan.

About B&P:

The Bread & Puppet Theater is a political puppet theater founded in 1963 by Peter & Elka Schumann on New York City’s Lower East Side. Now based in Glover, VT, the company regularly tours the country and world with tightly composed theater pieces as well as sprawling outdoor pageants. The internationally celebrated company champions a visually rich, street-theater brand of performance art filled with music, dance, and slapstick elements. Believing that theater is a basic necessity like bread, the company frequently brings its work to the streets for those who may not otherwise go to the theater. Its shows are political and spectacular, with puppets often on stilts, wearing huge masks with expressive faces, singing, dancing, and playing music.

Bread and Puppet is recognized throughout the world and has won distinction at international theater festivals in Italy, Poland, Colombia, and Yugoslavia, beginning with their break-out performances at the 1968 Nancy Festival in France. Notable awards include the Erasmus Prize of Amsterdam, 4 Obies, the Puppeteers of America's President Award, and the Vermont Governor's Award. Bread and Puppet is constantly active, performing at its farm in Glover, VT, and in local churches, schools and parades. It regularly tours Europe, Canada, and the United States and has recently visited El Salvador, Haiti, Russia, and Korea.

Bread & Puppet continues making new work and is one of the oldest, nonprofit, self-supporting theatrical companies in the country.

Calling all artists! Off the Walls Arts is excited to host a 4-part introductory mural workshop series taught by Memphis graffiti legend Brandon “Nosey” Marshall.

Participants will design and paint their own 10’ x 10’ murals, installed on a wall in our South Memphis neighborhood. Marshall will break down each step of the process over four 3-hour sessions. The workshop schedule is as follows:

Session 1 (Sunday 9/6): Group shows up with images/drawings and chooses their spot. Discuss grid methods and put sketches up on wall.

Session 2 (Sunday 9/13): Begin blocking in large sections. Discuss paints, materials, and tools.

Session 3 (Sunday 9/20): Fill in technical renderings and details. Discuss practical tips and tricks.

Session 4 (Sunday 9/27): Finalize details. Discuss clear coat options.

All sessions run from 12 pm to 3 pm. Students are welcome to continue working on their murals after the session ends.

Entry for the course is $300 per person, with a limited class of 15 students. Tickets are a one-time purchase for the entire course. Spots will go fast, so get yours today at https://nosey.eventbrite.com! **NOTE: This is a four-part series, so single-session tickets are not available.

Participants are asked to bring preliminary drawings and concepts for their mural, plus a ladder. All other materials are provided.

The completed murals will be unveiled on Sunday, November 1st, at Off the Walls Arts’ LOCOmotion Community Event and Parade, featuring free live music and family fun!

About the Instructor:

“As one of Memphis’ pioneer graffiti artists, Marshall’s work is primal and practical. Under the alias “Nosey,” he spread his moniker throughout Memphis in the form of stylized, spray painted text you might see underneath bridges and on the side of railroad cars.

Marshall’s body of work has grown and style has developed over the years, from the abstract expressionist style on the side of Pavo Salon in Midtown Memphis to his vibrant, colorful HIV awareness mural at the 1600 Block of Bellevue.” —Click Magazine

Since graduating from the University of Memphis with a degree in Graphic Design, Brandon “Nosey” Marshall has established himself as a visual artist specializing in mural-making and Public Art, with a strong focus on community engagement and mobilization. Marshall’s current professional endeavors stem from an extensive background in the Hip Hop Community as a Graffiti Artist, B-Boy, promoter, and educator. Marshall is the founder and lead organizer of the “Soul Food” graffiti art festival. He has secured wall space and painted at mural festivals from Denver to Melbourne, and constantly strives for excellence within each of his artistic practices.

Through mark-making, movement, layering, and improvisation, participants will create large scale drawings and paintings that evolve through response rather than planning. Together we’ll build a surface full of marks and begin a conversation with what is already on the page, allowing the artwork to emerge through curiosity, intuition, and play. Working on paper that stretches from the wall onto the floor, we’ll use oversized brushes, found objects, paint, drawing, and mixed media to make marks, move our bodies, and experiment.

The question we’ll be asking ourselves throughout the workshop is: What happens when we let ourselves get BIG? This isn’t about making something perfect. It’s about taking up space, following what feels interesting, making a mess, and seeing what happens when we let ourselves get a little bigger than usual.

This workshop is an invitation to trust your inner voice, take creative risks, use your whole body in the process, and discover what becomes possible when you give yourself permission to take up space.

All materials are provided, just bring your creativity!

Happy Accident is back in Memphis for another electrifyingly eccentric puppet show! Belching forth from the glorified backwater village of Portland, OR, Happy Accident’s work explores the exponential pace of overwhelming absurdity in our world. Found objects, large scale puppets and sputtering lights bring you face to face with the cuddly nightmare that is everyday life. An anti-clown car driven by puppeteer liz HOWLS and co-piloted by musician/lighting enthusiast Drew Simpson, Happy Accident ecstatically careens down the wrong side of the lost highway leaving a trail of old copies of Weekly World News and Jack in the Box wrappers in its wake. Colorfully reimagining Saturday mornings spent drooling over piles of synthetic crap in front of the TV, Happy Accident revels in naked, antipathetic americana. You will probably laugh, you might cry, and like other designer drugs, you will want more within minutes. Ultimately you will ask yourself, “What kind of culture would produce something like this?”

Guest performing at the puppet show is Moxie Macabre! With sultry, fluid flair and androgynous glamour, the "Morbid Muse of Memphis", Moxie Macabre is a non-binary burlesque artist and clown in their third year of performing. Transmuting the macabre through movement, they draw much inspiration from darkness - tracing their heels along silver linings on the fringes of it - teasing you with their spiteful revelry.

All writers are welcome (and we are ALL writers).

About the Instructors:

Dr. Valentine Leonard taught philosophy and women's studies at the University of Memphis for ten years, before realizing she’d rather create than theorize about it. She founded MeWE: the Memphis Writers Ensemble in 2006, a colorful and ever-evolving community of untamed Southern writers. She has been offering weekly creative writing workshops and international yoga and writing retreats ever since.

Valentine is the author of two books: Transcendental Experience and the Thought of the Virtual (SUNY Press, 2008), a philosophical essay on the role of memory, creativity, and the unconscious in 20th-century French thought; and Even the Breath (Lavender Ink / Diálogos, 2017), a gritty novel with a yogic bent. She dedicated the last five years to co-owning and running Delta Groove Yoga studio and training programs. Currently, she is writing a genre-bending memoir about her recent breast cancer journey.

Dr. Ann Walton Sieber spent the first half of her writing life as an indie magazine editor in Houston, with beats ranging from theater to LGBT culture, quinceañeras to architecture, to life on the streets.

Ann recently earned her doctorate in liberal studies from the University of Memphis with her creative nonfiction memoir-in process "This Seeming Chaos" — part history diving bell, part conversation with the dead — tracing the long shadow of her grandfather Elmer and the storms, literal and otherwise, that shaped her family across five generations. Her family memoir is a search for home in diverse realms: the archives of memory; a university cello studio; the WWI battlefields of France; the St. Louis World’s Fair; a precious house in Houston full of books and light; even on a remote Arizona Apache reservation.

In his exhibition antilectual photography, Venezuelan-born & Memphis-based artist Armando Salas displays 20 years of analog experimentation, crafting dynamic compositions that pay homage to art history & photography. Salas describes his antilectual photography practice as

“both a play on words and an artistic stance, born from my personal experience with dyslexia and memory difficulties.

I have always struggled to remember names, movements, and references that are often considered the “language” of the art world.

This inability to categorize or intellectually articulate my influences eventually became the very foundation of my creative process.

It is not about rejecting intellectuality, but about breaking the academy's limitations on how education should be understood.”
